We started our train journey in Catford, which borders Forest Hill, where I grew up. The name probably comes from “cattle ford” across the river Ravensbourne. It’s been a multi-cultural working-class area of South East London for all the time I’ve known it, although its history stretches back to the 13th century, when, like most of current London, it was a small place in the countryside.
King’s Cross railway station, where we caught the train to Edinburgh, has changed dramatically since I last lived in London. One of many improvements resulting from the London Olympics. As we are heading for the area of Scotland made famous by the Hogwarts train journey, we thought we’d take our photo at platform 9 3/4, but the line was way too long. (Hence photo of random strangers below). However, not only are the toilets (“loos”) now free, but it turns out they have champion status 🙂
